The MDA was contacted several months ago to send a representative to sit on a panel to discuss the interaction of religious beliefs with clinical practice to the 2nd year medical students at Imperial College. The event was entitled "Religion, Culture, Personal Beliefs and Medical Ethics".
Dr. Talib Mearza attended the morning lecture session on the 21st of January 2009. The other members of the panel were Dr. Michael Fertleman, consultant in Care of the Elderly medicine representing the Jewish faith and Andrew Wilson, the resident Chaplain, with Dr. Alison Mears chairing the session.
Several issues were discussed including the handling of termination requests, end of life issues and contraception.
Overall the session, the first to be held at Imperial College was mutually beneficial and is set to be a regular feature in the medical school’s curriculum.
