Ramadan and Health
In the lead up to Ramadan we supported Emerald Network’s Pre-Ramadan Soiree and gave a talk on how to have a healthy Ramadan, alongside inspiring speakers to set us in the right frame of mind for the blessed month. We are pleased to partner with Islam Channel again this year to raise awareness of health issues during Ramadan. Please do look out out for us on the Iftar with Islam Channel programme on Sky Channel 727. We will also be on RamadanFM on 107FM (Milton Keynes only) or online via Facebook Live. We are also pleased to be supporting the British Asian Trust’s mental health programmes in Pakistan and Bangladesh this Ramadan. Thank you to all those who have donated and are attending the iftar.
We are running a number of workshops and have launched our 5 Pillars of Health Campaign encouraging a holistic approach to health during this blessed month. We are also pleased to publish a new Diet & Ramadan leaflet written by our Lead Dietician, Shamshed Shah, an experienced dietician of over 15 years who runs a radio show and a website dedicated to healthy eating. The leaflet can be found below so please feel free to share with your contacts and networks.
Thank you to all those who participated in our rapid assessment survey exploring the extent of racial and religious discrimination in the NHS. The results were presented at a conference hosted by the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin with representatives present from the General Medical Council, British Medical Association, British Medical Journal, several Royal Colleges and other institutions. A shocking 75% of doctors who reported religious discrimination were Muslim and we highlighted some of the barriers that they face at work. We are pleased to report that the GMC has commissioned work to look into discrimination around fitness to practice issues. We are continuing our work to campaign for this further and to make training and working practices free from discrimination. We have been invited to the BMA Conference this summer to develop an action plan to support BME doctors. In other policy work we have been involved in supporting the development of numerous initiatives including Organ Donation with the Department of Health, Domestic Violence early intervention with the Better Communities Business Network and the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Hajj health and hate crime. We are pleased that the APPG on British Muslim’s completed report “Faith as an Emergency Pillar” has been published and MDA’s work has been highlighted in the report. This is a testimony to all our hard working volunteers. The full report can be read here:
Our chairperson Dr Hina Shahid is thrilled to be named as one of the 100 most influential British Muslims in the UK and to be shortlisted for the Asian Women of Achievement Award under the Social and Humanitarian category. She dedicates this to the hard work and commitment of MDA’s team and volunteers without whom our work would not be possible.

Please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org if you are willing to give up a small amount of your time to volunteer with us. You don’t have to be a medic to volunteer and we are particularly looking for volunteers who can offer admin and IT support. We are also keen to hear from sponsors.
